This is how Will Graham plays God. He chooses salvation for one man and damnation for the other. He uses them both: one is his self-reassurance, a guarantee of his innocence preserved the other his weapon of justice and death, blunt instrument used when he’s at his most helpless and powerless.
These men cannot be more drastically different.
Peter hides in the shadows, seeks comfort of darkness, he does not kill but offers rebirth. He is gentle and genuine, violence and cruelty feel abnormal to him. A child trapped in a grown man’s skin.
Matthew is none of these things. He’s desperate for light and glory to shine upon him so that he could be finally seen and acknowledged for what he is. A predator trapped in man’s skin. He hides in the shadows but only because he has to. He doesn’t want to be a shadow man anymore, but a majestic bird, soaring high out in the open, free, unstoppable, powerful. Violence is a poem to him, cruelty is an act of tribute, blood is his ink and knife is his brush. Romantic artist expressing himself in death but not for the sake of death. Death is a freedom he offers to Will, his selfless declaration of worship, just like Peter wants to give his object of admiration something beautiful, rebirth in death.
So, different men and yet similar reasons for their disturbed behaviour: selflessness and awe. Different men yet both mentally damaged and in this used by selfish, cruel men. How is Will different from Ingram in exploring Matthew’s blind devotion to conduct his vengeful scheme? Wrath blinds him, revenge dulls his empathy so he asks this disturbed kid having nothing but absolute worship and loyalty to commit murder, to condemn his life with more violence. Will pushes Matthew more into eating him sickness, he scratches Matthew’s itch with allowance to act, to take away life. Peter does not deserve to kill, Peter deserves to stay pure and uncorrupted, while Matthew is ordered to kill, unhesitatingly condemned, because he’s already tainted? because he’s already broken??
No, because Will Graham is not always a nice guy. He’s selfish and self-absorbed, sometimes involuntary, sometimes with cruel, deliberate agenda. His empathy allows him to understand people as deep as it is possible and thus use them according to his whims, sometimes purposefully, sometimes without realising it. Will Graham is first and foremost a survivor with all drastic repercussions so he sacrifices one man for his own freedom and saves the other for his own soul redemption, because the circumstances of his predicament demands it.
